You’re Sew Creative! is a fun, colorful and inviting place for students age 8 through 16 to learn the basics of sewing and to use this knowledge to express themselves creatively through textile art. It is a place designed and set up with them in mind, a place where they can feel free to create and think outside the box.
My child wishes to learn how to sew. Why should I encourage him/her?
First of all, interest in sewing has been making a comeback in recent years. We seem to have skipped a generation and now many young people are showing an interest in wanting to learn. Some are even seeing it as something “new”. Chances are your child’s grandmother was a sewer but for whatever reason, this skill didn’t get passed down to you. Or maybe it did but, frankly, you don’t have time to teach your own child (you’re already playing taxi driver for all their other activities). I get that! That’s why I make it super easy for you. YSC provides all the supplies your child will need – fabric, thread, zippers, buttons, even a sewing machine! Who needs yet another errand when you have enough on your plate already? Instead, all you have to do is drop your child off each week.
Second, you’d be surprised how often your child will have a chance to exercise and develop his/her math and problem-solving skills, as well as sequencing and project planning. Schools are even beginning to incorporate things like sewing and crafts into STEM (STEAM) education as they are finding these creative activities are helpful for meeting student objectives. Plus, sewing is a good way for your child to learn patience. Like when your child’s thread gets all bunched-up underneath and it’s time to pull out the seam ripper (yeah, that will happen).
And finally, why not encourage ANYTHING children want to do that gets them off the computer screen and working creatively with their hands? Learning to sew can provide that and more.
